Static vs dynamic QR Codes: do you really need to pay monthly?
A static QR Code stores your link directly and never expires, but cannot be edited after printing. A dynamic one redirects through a service, so you can edit it and see scans, but it usually needs a subscription. If your link will not change, static is enough.
What each type is
A static QR Code holds the content (a link, text, Wi-Fi details) directly in the pattern. Once it is made, it works without any service and cannot change.
A dynamic QR Code holds a short link to a service, which redirects to your destination. You can change the destination later and often see scan statistics, but the code works only while that service and your plan are active.
What you pay for with dynamic codes
- Changing the destination after printing.
- Scan counts and reports.
- Sometimes team features, branded short links, and integrations.
Because the redirect has to keep running, dynamic codes are usually sold as a subscription. If the subscription ends, the codes can stop working.
When static is enough
- A link that will not change: your website, a profile, a menu PDF.
- Wi-Fi details, contact cards, plain text.
- Anything you print once and want to work for as long as the printed item exists.
When you do need dynamic
- You will reprint rarely but need to change where the code points.
- You must measure scans by campaign or location.
How to decide
- Will the destination ever change? If no, static.
- Do you need scan statistics? If no, static.
- If either is yes, pick a dynamic service, and keep your subscription active for as long as the printed codes are in use.

Frequently asked questions
Do static QR Codes expire?
No. A static code contains its content directly, so it keeps working as long as the destination exists.
Can I change the link of a static QR Code?
No. To point somewhere else you must make and print a new code.
Are static QR Codes less secure?
Not inherently. A static code shows exactly what it contains; a dynamic code routes through a third-party redirect.
