Best QR Code size for print: minimum sizes and a test checklist

Published by Lfcs Softwares · Updated 2026-10-20

Print a QR Code at least 2 × 2 cm for close-range scanning, and about one-tenth as wide as the scanning distance for signs and posters. Keep a blank margin of at least 4 modules around it and test a printed proof first.

The short answer

Print a QR Code at least 2 × 2 cm (about 0.8 in) for close-range use, and make it larger as the scanning distance grows. A common rule of thumb is a code about one-tenth as wide as the distance it will be scanned from: a poster scanned from 2 m away should carry a code around 20 cm wide. These are starting points, not guarantees. A denser code (longer link) needs more room.

Size by distance

Where it is scannedTypical distanceStarting size
Business card, flyer, menu in hand20–30 cm2–3 cm
Table tent, shelf label, packaging30–50 cm3–4 cm
Poster, window sign1–2 m10–20 cm
Billboard, large banner5 m or more50 cm or more

The distances are estimates for a phone camera. Always print one proof at the real size and scan it from the real distance.

Keep the quiet zone

The quiet zone is the blank margin around the code. The usual rule is at least 4 modules (4 of the code's small squares) of empty space on every side. If your layout crops it or puts text or a border against the code, scanners may fail. See QR Code not scanning? 9 fixes.

Test checklist before the print run

  1. Print one proof at the exact final size, on the final material if you can.
  2. Scan it with two phones, from the real distance and in the real light.
  3. Check the link opens the right page.
  4. Only then print the whole run.

Frequently asked questions

What is the smallest QR Code size that works?

Around 2 × 2 cm (0.8 in) is a common minimum for close-range scanning, but it depends on how dense the code is. A short link makes a simpler code that scans at smaller sizes.

How big should a QR Code be on a poster?

Use the one-tenth rule as a starting point: scanned from 2 m away, aim for about 20 cm wide, then test a proof.
