QR Code not scanning? 9 fixes that work

Published by Lfcs Softwares · Updated 2026-10-19

Most QR Codes that fail have one of nine causes: low contrast, no quiet zone, a code that is too small, a logo that is too big, a link that is too long, a blurry image, a bad surface, a broken link, or a reader that is struggling. Fix them in that order.

The quick checklist

  1. Contrast. Make the dots clearly darker than the background. Dark on light is the safest. Light dots on a dark background fail on some readers, and low-contrast brand colors fail often.
  2. Quiet zone. Leave an empty margin around the code. The usual rule is at least four modules (dots) of blank space on every side. Don't crop it or put text against it.
  3. Size and distance. A small code read from far away won't scan. A common rule of thumb is a code about one-tenth as wide as the scanning distance; as a minimum, many guides suggest around 2 cm (0.8 in) for close-range printed codes. Test at the real size.
  4. Logo too big. A large or detailed logo covers too much of the code. Shrink it or remove it.
  5. Too much data. A long link makes a dense code with tiny dots. Use a shorter link.
  6. Low resolution or stretched image. A blurry or non-square image breaks the pattern. Export a larger PNG or use SVG, and keep the proportions square.
  7. Bad surface. Glossy, curved, wrinkled, or reflective surfaces hurt scanning. Use a matte finish or move the code to a flat area.
  8. The link is wrong. Sometimes the code scans, but the page is broken or has a typo. Open the link yourself.
  9. The reader. Try another phone or the camera app instead of a third-party scanner. If it scans on one phone but not another, simplify the code.

Gradients, animation, and colors

Fancy styling can reduce contrast. If a styled code won't scan, test a plain black-on-white version of the same link. If that works, the styling is the problem. Reduce the effects or pick darker colors.

A simple way to test

Recreating the code with StyloQR

If you need to rebuild a code with more contrast, the StyloQR Chrome extension lets you pick colors, remove the logo, and export a larger PNG or an SVG. Single codes are free.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my QR Code scan on one phone but not another?

Different cameras and apps tolerate different contrast, size, and damage. Simplify the code (higher contrast, shorter link, smaller logo) until it works on all your test phones.

How do I test a QR Code before printing?

Scan it with at least two phones, from the real distance and lighting. For print, scan a proof copy first.
